About Kalklitir's lime-paint
Lime paint, also known as limewash, has a rich history spanning thousands of years and numerous civilizations. Ancient cultures such as those in Egypt, Greece, and Rome utilized limewash for its protective and decorative qualities. Derived from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and water, this natural paint provided a breathable barrier that helped prevent moisture damage and decay in buildings. Its high pH level imparts natural antibacterial properties, making it a hygienic choice for various structures.
In modern times, homeowners and designers are drawn to Lime Paint for its eco-friendly nature, breathability, and the soft, decorative and matte finish it provides. Additionally, Lime Paint is free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it a healthier option for indoor environments.
Kalklitir's Lime Paint is a modern take on traditional limewash, adapted for contemporary use while preserving its timeless qualities.
Crafted from natural materials, our eco-friendly and VOC free Lime Paint is supplied in powder form, allowing users to mix it with water as needed. This approach not only reduces environmental impact by minimizing packaging and transportation emissions but also ensures a longer shelf life and greater flexibility in preparation.
Kalklitir's Lime Paint offers a soft matte and a subtle cloudy or shadowy finish, adding depth and character to the surface. This finish is achieved through application techniques that allow for natural variations in tone, resulting in a surface that feels both organic and refined.
Applying two layers is recommended for optimal results and coverage.
1 kg bag of Kalklitir's Lime Paint covers approximately 8 square meters (85 square feet) when applied in two layers (about 16m2 (170 sf )when applied in one layer)
Similarly, 500 g bag covers about 4 square meters (42.5 square feet) when applied in two layers (about 8m2 (85 sf) when applied in one layer)
Porous surfaces, such as unpainted drywall, plaster, concrete or raw wood, tend to absorb more paint, potentially requiring additional coats or primer to achieve the desired finish. Conversely, smoother, previously painted surfaces may require less paint.
Measure the length and width/height of your surface. Multiply these numbers to find your square meters /square feet.
Example:
Suppose you have a wall that is 4 meters long and 2 meters high.
Step 1: Measure the Dimensions
- Length: 4 meters
- Height: 2 meters
Step 2: Calculate the Area
- Area = Length × Height
- Area = 4 m × 2 m = 8 m²
1 kg Lime Paint bag should normally be enough to cover that area in two layers.
To ensure accurate paint coverage, it's essential to calculate the total surface area you intend to paint. By following these steps, you'll ensure you purchase the right amount of paint for your project, minimizing waste and ensuring a consistent finish.
To mix Kalklitir's Lime Paint, you'll need to combine the powdered paint with water. The specific water-to-powder ratio and mixing instructions are provided on the packaging of the product. For detailed guidance, you can refer to the instructions on the back of the bag or you may find our instructional video helpful here
Once mixed with water, Lime Paint should be stored in an airtight container.
Though Lime Paint is ideal to use when freshly mixed, it can be stored in airtight container for up to a year.
Storage Recommendations:
- Airtight Sealing: Store the paint in a tightly sealed, airtight container to minimize exposure to air, which can cause the paint to thicken and harden.
- Surface Layer: Adding a thin layer of water on top of the paint before sealing can help prevent it from drying out, specially if you are storing it for longer time.
- Storage Conditions: Keep the container in a cool, dry place, away from extreme temperatures, as heat can accelerate drying and cold can affect the paint's consistency.
Reusing Stored Paint:
- Stirring: Before use, thoroughly stir the stored paint to ensure a smooth, lump-free consistency.
- Adjusting Consistency: If the paint has thickened, gradually add small amounts of water, stirring well after each addition, until it reaches a workable consistency.
Considerations:
- Volume: Larger volumes of paint tend to maintain their consistency better than small amounts, which may dry out more quickly in the bucket.
Unmixed lime paint powder can be stored indefinitely if kept dry and sealed. Just make sure it’s stored in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and humidity. If stored properly, it won’t go bad, making it a great long-term option to keep on hand for future projects.
If Lime Paint powder is several years old but has been kept sealed, dry, and free from moisture, the quality should remain intact. The powder is made from natural mineral components, it doesn’t degrade easily over time.
However, here are a few tips to check its quality before use:
- Visual check: Look for clumping or discoloration. If the powder has absorbed moisture, it may have hardened or formed lumps.
- Smell check: There should be no strong or unusual odors. A fresh bag of lime paint powder has a very mild, earthy smell.
- Mix test: Mix a small amount with water and stir well. If it blends smoothly without gritty particles or inconsistencies, it should be perfectly usable.
If in doubt, it's always good to test a small area before starting a larger project.
Choosing the right color for your space can be challenging, especially when relying on digital screens. The final appearance of Kalklitir's lime paint is influenced by several factors:
- Surface Absorption: Porous surfaces may absorb more paint, affecting the color intensity.
- Application Technique: Methods like brushing can create different textures and shades.
- Lighting and Surroundings: Natural and artificial light, as well as surrounding colors, can alter the perceived hue.
To accurately assess how a color will look in your environment, consider the following:

Yes, you can create your own custom Lime Paint color using Kalklitir's products. By blending 2 colors from our signature collection, you can achieve a unique shade tailored to your preferences. Mixing more than two Lime Paint colors can lead to inconsistency in the finish. This is because Lime Paint is a natural material, and combining multiple pigments increases the risk of uneven color distribution, resulting in patchiness or streaks on the surface. Mixing more than two colors can work, especially when using lighter shades. Lighter tones tend to blend more harmoniously, reducing the risk of noticeable inconsistencies.
How to Mix Your Own Custom Lime Paint color
1. Choose Your Base Colors
- Select 2 colors from Kalklitir's collection. Limiting to a maximum of two ensures a harmonious blend and prevents uneven finishes.
- To lighten a shade, consider mixing it with a lighter tone like Blanco.
- For a darker or more muted hue, incorporate a deeper color from the range.
2. Mix the Dry Powders
- In a clean, dry container, combine the selected powdered colors thoroughly.
- Ensure the powders are well-blended to achieve a consistent color throughout.
3. Add Water Gradually
- Begin by adding water to the mixed powder. A general guideline is to use approximately 1.7 liters of water per 1 kg of powder.
- Stir continuously to achieve a smooth, lump-free consistency.
4. Test Your Mixture
- Before applying to your walls, test the custom mix, preferable on a sample board.
Here's a comprehensive guide to suitable surfaces for applying Kalklitir's Lime Paint as well as priming recommendations.
Surfaces always need to be stable (address any flaking or peeling areas) clean and free of dust and grease:
Suitable Surfaces for Lime Paint:
- Previously painted Surfaces: If surfaces have been painted using a water based paint that is matte or semi matte you can apply Lime Paint directly on top.
- Mineral Absorbent Surfaces: Lime Paint is deal for materials like f.ex. bricks and concrete.
- Previously plastered surfaces: Lf the whole surface is plastered, then you can apply Lime Paint on top.
- Existing Lime Paint: Yes, Lime Paint can be applied in many layers, in same color or you can change to another color.
- Gypsum walls, also know as plasterboards or drywall: Gypsum walls, especially those with plastered joints, can have varying levels of absorbency, leading to uneven lime paint finishes. To address this you can either use a primer first and/or more layers may be needed in order to get an even absorption. It is important that joints and patches are evenly sanded down as Lime Paint has a very matte, mineral finish that can emphasize surface imperfections, including uneven patches or repaired joints.
Considerations for Absorbent Surfaces:
- Surfaces like fully plastered walls, gypsum walls, bricks and concrete may absorb more paint, potentially requiring additional coats for full coverage.
When to Use a Primer:
- Uncertain Surface Composition: If the surface has been patched with materials to fix joints, cracks, holes etc. or surfaces are of unknown composition, they have glossy paint or oil-based paints, it's advised to apply a primer to ensure proper adhesion and even absorption.
- Raw wood: After spot-priming the knots, apply a suitable primer over the entire wooden surface. This ensures uniform absorption and color consistency when applying lime paint.
- Wallpapered Surfaces: Before applying Lime Paint over wallpaper, a primer is essential. It is very important to ensure the wallpaper is securely attached as the paper will come wet and may loosen up. Make sure there is no glue residue visible in joints etc. as the Lime Paint may not adhere as well to the glue and it may also cause discoloration. In general, we do have good experience with using Lime Paint on wallpapers.
Recommended Primers:
- Kalklitir's Primer: A water-based product suitable for various surfaces, including water-based painted surfaces, Lime Paint, alkyd-based paints, concrete, plaster, gypsum, MDF, wood and plywood. It aids in achieving even absorption and reducing the risk of discoloration.
- Alternative Primers: Water-based primers free of alkyds can be used. However, for oil-based surfaces, consult with a local paint supplier to select an appropriate water-based primer.
A top coat is not always necessary, but it can be very helpful depending on where you're using the Lime Paint.
Here's a simple breakdown:
When to use a Top Coat:
- In high-traffic areas (hallways, entryways, staircases).
- In spaces exposed to splashes or dirt (kitchens, around sinks, bathrooms—but not inside showers).
- On surfaces where you want to be able to gently clean the wall.
When you can skip it:
- In low-traffic areas like bedrooms, living rooms, or ceilings.
- If you prefer a fully breathable, natural lime finish.
Important note:
Lime Paint is naturally breathable and has a beautiful, matte, powdery finish. A top coat will slightly deepen the color and reduce breathability—but it adds a layer of protection.
Kalklitir Top Coat is a water-based product in powder form designed specifically to be applied over Lime-Painted or Plaster Painted surfaces. It adds a matte protective layer in areas where extra durability is desired or required.
Top Coat helps protect walls against stains, splashes, and marks. The more layers applied—with proper drying time in between—the greater the level of protection.
To use Kalklitir's Lime Paint, you’ll need the following:
Materials & Tools:
- Kalklitir's Lime Paint powder (choose your desired color)
- Measuring jug (for the water)
- Clean water (cold or room temperature tap water is perfectly fine, avoid using hot water. Just have in mind strong impurities or high chlorine content, which is rare in most households, can be a concern in some areas)
- Mixing bucket (preferably with a lid)
- Hand whisk or electric mixer (for smooth consistency)
- Large paint brush (we do offer good quality brushes made specially for us in Italy with longer hair for smooth application)
- Protective gear (gloves, googles and f.ex. an apron)
- Drop cloths & painter’s tape (to protect surrounding areas)
- Primer (optional, but recommended in certain cases)
Make sure you're working in a well-ventilated area, especially when mixing the powder. Using a mask is always recommended to avoid inhaling the fine powder when mixing the paint.
There are two main techniques we recommend when working with Kalklitir's Lime Paint, and we always use a brush rather than a roller. The most common methods are the up-and-down technique and the X-stroke technique. Which one you choose comes down to personal preference and the look you wish to achieve.
X-Strokes / Cross-Stroke Method
- What it is: Painting in random, overlapping "X" or criss-cross strokes with the brush.
- Result:
- Best for: Highlighting the natural, handcrafted beauty of Lime Paint. Most often used with Kalklitir paints and will create more depth and cloudy like results, the signature Lime Paint finish.
- Up-and-Down Method (Vertical Strokes)
- What it is: Painting in long, straight, vertical strokes, using the brush — like how you'd apply regular wall.
- Result:
- Best for: People looking for a cleaner or more subtle lime paint look.
Both methods are easy to do, you can see videos on our page that demonstrate both techniques, we recommend that you watch them to get a better understanding.
Keep in mind that there’s no right or wrong outcome when working with natural materials like Lime Paint. The final look will vary depending on your application method and surface.
Each result is unique and part of its charm!
We recommend watching our instructional video for a clear and simple guide to the application process — it’s much easier when you can see it step by step.
Technical Version for guidance:
Start painting in corner or edge of the wall or a ceiling and keep going across in one go—don’t stop halfway through! Lime paint dries fast, and if you take a break, you might end up with visible lines or uneven patches.
Whether you go with straight up-and-down strokes or X-shaped ones, keep your brush moving and try to blend everything while it’s still wet. The key is to do the whole surface without taking long breaks – this helps avoid visible lines or patches.
Work methodically from top to bottom, blending each section into the next while the paint is still wet. This ensures a seamless, organic finish.
If needed, get help to ensure large areas can be completed without interruption.
Additional note;
Applying consistent pressure on the brush creates a smooth, more uniform look, while changing the pressure as you paint can enhance color variation and result in a more cloudier effect.
Wet lime paint will appear considerably darker than the final shade. As it begins to dry, it will gradually lighten and reveal the true color nuance you selected.
Important to remember;
Make sure to stir well in the bucket before you start and throughout the whole painting process to prevent pigments from sinking to the bottom as that can cause discoloration.
Trust the process;
When applying Lime Paint, there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Each surface and application will have its own unique character. Trust the process as you go, and with each stroke, you’ll master it in your own way. Remember, the final result is personal, and the beauty of Lime Paint lies in its natural, organic variations. Keep an open mind and enjoy the creative process!
Drying Time for Lime Paint
After applying the first layer, it typically takes around 2–5 hours before you can begin the second coat. However, this can vary depending on the temperature and humidity of the room—warm, dry spaces will dry faster, while cooler, more humid environments may take longer.
Wet lime paint will appear considerably darker than the final shade. As it begins to dry, it will gradually lighten.
Once the first layer has dried, you can proceed with the second layer. After the final coat, drying time will be slightly longer.
Good to keep in mind:
Painting in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces can cause the paint to dry too quickly, making it hard to blend and leading to visible lines or patches.
Kalklitir’s Lime Paint can take up to a week or even longer to fully harden. This curing time can vary depending on the color used and the conditions of the space. Even if the surface looks dry, it’s still in the process of hardening—so treat it gently for the first few days to avoid damage.
Important to know:
Avoid getting water splashes on the Lime Paint during the first 72 hours, as the surface is still sensitive and moisture can leave visible stains at this early stage.
After the initial 72-hour period, clean water typically won’t leave visible stains, however, muddy or dirty water can still cause marks on the surface.
If needed, when can Top Coat be applied:
For optimal results, we recommend allowing the Lime Paint to fully dry and begin the hardening process for a minimum of 72 hours before applying the Top Coat. This waiting period ensures better adhesion and durability of the protective layer, helping to preserve the beauty and integrity of the finish.
Here's a list of common things to avoid when applying Kalklitir's Lime Paint, along with helpful tips to ensure the best result.
Not mixing the paint thoroughly➤ undissolved pigments can cause darker spots or streaks on the wall. Make sure the powder is fully mixed with water until smooth before application. We recommend stirring the paint thoroughly for at least 10 minutes. Letting the mixture sit a bit longer before use will help achieve a smoother consistency and reduce the chance of undissolved pigments.
Undissolved pigments are leaving spots or streaks on the surface➤ if undissolved pigments appear on the surface and leave dark spots or streaks, gently blend them out with your brush while the paint is still wet, and give the mixture an extra stir to ensure better consistency.
Painting Over Wet Layers Too Soon➤ allow the first layer to dry fully (typically 2–5 hours, depending on temperature and humidity) before starting the second layer. Rushing this step may lift the first layer or cause uneven layering and discoloration.
Applying on unprepared surfaces➤ surfaces should be stable, clean, dry, and free of grease or dust. Failing to prepare properly can lead to poor adhesion, discoloration and uneven results.
Using a Paint Roller➤ we recommend using a brush only. Rollers don’t work as well and can lead to a patchy look.
Using a Dirty or Shedding Brush➤ always use a clean, high-quality brush. Remove any loose hairs before you start, and if one lands on the surface, remove it immediately to avoid marks.
Overworking the paint when applying with the brush➤ avoid overworking or rubbing areas that have started to dry and set, as this can disturb the surface and cause the paint to loosen, resulting in a dusty finish.
Avoid trying to fix sports or areas that have stated to dry➤ don't try and fix spots or areas on parts of the wall once you have painted and/or the paint is starting to dry as that will leave visible marks. Always paint the whole surface in one go.
If paint drips onto areas you haven’t yet started painting➤ use your brush to blend it out immediately to avoid visible drops, lines, or marks in the final finish.
Yes, Kalklitir's Lime Paint can be used in bathrooms, but with a few important considerations:
Where It Works Well:
- Bathroom walls that are not exposed to direct and frequent water contact (like splash zones).
- Ventilated areas where humidity can dissipate easily (Lime Paint needs air to dry).
What to Keep in Mind:
- Do not use Lime Paint inside showers or on walls that get soaked regularly.
- Apply a Top Coat over the lime-painted surface to help protect against splashes, stains, and moisture f.ex. around sink etc.
- For high-moisture areas, applying multiple layers of Top Coat is advised for better protection.
- Proper surface preparation and ensuring the wall is dry, clean, and grease-free is especially important in humid spaces.
- There might be rules and regulations regarding the use of specific materials in bathrooms, especially depending on the country, region, or building type (residential vs. commercial), like waterproof membranes or moisture barriers behind paint or finishes.
Lime Paint is completely matte which means it will enhance the texture of any surface, including imperfections, brushstrokes, and raised patterns.
On embossed or uneven surfaces, the color may appear more varied, creating an organic and artistic effect — something many people love.
Lime Paint is a delicate, breathable finish designed primarily for walls and ceilings. It is not formulated to withstand foot traffic, abrasion, or regular cleaning required for floors.
Even with a protective top coat, it won’t offer the durability or resistance needed for flooring applications.
Over time, floors painted with Lime Paint would likely show wear, dustiness, or damage.
Yes, Lime Paint can be used on fireplaces, and is ideal for decorative fireplace surrounds or mantels, but not for interior fireboxes or areas exposed to direct flames or extreme heat.
Few important considerations:
- Lime Paint can be applied on surfaces that do not exceed approximately 50°C / 122°F — essentially, if you can comfortably touch the surface without burning your hand, it's suitable for painting.
- Decorative fireplace surrounds (not exposed to high heat) are ideal surfaces.
- Works beautifully on plaster, stone, brick, or concrete finishes.
- Creates a lovely chalky, natural look that complements rustic or minimal interiors.
- Soot & stains: Lime Paint is porous and may absorb soot or smoke over time.
While traditional lime-wash has historically been used on exterior surfaces, Kalklitir’s focus at this moment, is on interior surfaces where environmental conditions are more stable.
When using Lime Paint on exterior surfaces, it's important to carefully consider factors such as surface materials, weather conditions, environmental exposure, and pollution, as all of these can significantly impact the durability and appearance of the finish.
Also, if Lime Paint is used on exterior surfaces, it cannot be painted over with other types of paint—only Lime Paint should be used for future touch-ups or color changes.
Yes, absolutely!
You can change colors or freshen up your walls by simply applying a new layer of Kalklitir Lime Paint.
Just make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free from grease or dust before you begin. The new layer will blend beautifully and give your walls a fresh, renewed look.
Yes, you can switch back to plastic (acrylic or latex) paint after using Lime Paint on interior surfaces. However, it’s important to prepare the surface properly first. This usually involves applying a suitable primer to ensure good adhesion and an even finish with the new paint.
Lime paint can be applied to a wide range of surfaces beyond walls and ceiling, including furniture, doors, tabletops, and other decorative items. However, to achieve a durable and long-lasting finish, careful preparation and proper finishing are essential. This typically includes thorough cleaning, light sanding, the use of appropriate primers, and—especially for high-traffic or functional surfaces—protective top coats or specialized sealants.
Achieving a beautiful and lasting result when painting furnitures or other items comes down to careful preparation and well-executed finishing touches.
Preparation is Key
- Clean the surface thoroughly to remove grease, dust, or wax.
- Sand lightly to help the paint adhere better.
- If the surface is already painted or sealed, de-gloss the surface and/or use a suitable primer.
Application Tips
- Always use a brush (not a roller) to apply lime paint. This enhances the texture and gives the signature matte, cloud-like finish.
- Apply paint in thin layers rather than thick, for a smoother, more durable result.
- Let the first coat dry completely before applying the second (typically 2–5 hours depending on conditions).
Protective Finishing
- Furniture is more prone to wear and tear, so we highly recommend using a top coat or sealer after painting.
- Kalklitir’s Top Coat is matte and VOC-free—ideal for protecting surfaces while preserving the natural look of lime paint. Several layers might be needed.
- For tabletops or other high-use surfaces, applying multiple layers of Top Coat is recommended. In cases where the surface will come into frequent contact with food, oil, or grease, we advise using a high-quality two-component PU varnish for added durability and protection—especially on tabletops.
Lime Stucco – a thicker version of our Lime Paint
By simply adding less water to the Lime Paint powder, you can create a thicker consistency known as Lime Stucco. This paste-like texture is best applied using a stainless steel spatula (we recommend our Japanese spatula for the smoothest results) to achieve a sleek, polished finish.
Stucco requires a bit more drying and hardening time compared to traditional Lime Paint, as it depends on the layer thickness, as well as temperature and humidity. The longer it’s left to dry, the better the final result will be.
Keep in mind that Lime Stucco may appear slightly darker than brush-applied Lime Paint due to its thicker texture and density.
Lime Stucco can be applied to both walls and tabletops, giving surfaces a smoother, more refined look compared to regular Lime Paint.
For high-use surfaces like tabletops, we recommend applying multiple layers of Top Coat for added protection. If the surface will frequently come into contact with food, oil, or grease, consider using a high-quality two-component PU varnish for extra durability and protection—especially for tabletops.
STUCCO RECIPE:
To make Lime Stucco, mix 1 kg of lime paint powder with:
- 0.8 liters of cold or room-temperature tap water for immediate use. Mix thoroughly and apply the same day.
- Alternatively, mix 1.1 liters of cold or room-temperature tap water with 1 kg of powder, let it rest in an airtight container overnight, and use it the following day for a smoother texture.
Keep in mind that Stucco requires approximately 2 to 2.5 times more product than standard lime paint applications, due to its thicker consistency.
